Visual Field - Matrix What is it? Visual field is the extent of our side vision. Apart from having good central vision, we also need good peripheral vision or normal visual fields to function properly. Why is it important to measure our visual field? Some disease processes affect our central vision first, others will attack our side vision or our peripheral vision. Optometrist check the central vision using letter charts, and can also check the side vision using Visual Field Analysers, such as the Matrix. Certain diseases can be picked up by analysing our visual field, and is an important tool used by optometrist and ophthalmologist. Which diseases can be picked up with visual field analysers? Optic nerve diseases, such as glaucoma, optic neuritis, ischaemic neuropathies to name just a few. Can I schedule a visual field test? It is important to get regular eye examinations, and a visual field can be schedules if deemed necessary.
